More Science (fiction) stories

Posted on April 26, 2007. Filed under: Life |

Movie tie-ins were once limited to hack novelisations and ‘collectable’ action figures. Now the range has seemingly been expanded to include ’science’ news stories. Yesterday, it was Superman, today it’s Spiderman. In today’s Metro newspaper there appears a story headlined “Spidey’s sticky suit not far off.” It claims that a suit, which would enable anyone to climb up buildings [...]

Green tea prevents HIV (maybe), kryptonite discovered (nearly) and other silly season stories

Posted on April 25, 2007. Filed under: Life |

It the silly season for British newspapers. Their pages are filled with non-stories, celebrity doings and pictures of David Cameron without a tie. Some of the more aspiring papers are trying to appeal, with a few of their summer fillers, to a readership that hungers for science orientated news. For instance…
One paper reports that British and American [...]

Branson missing ingredient

Posted on April 24, 2007. Filed under: Life, Politics |

Business superstar Sir Richard Branson, has asked the EU to extend the ‘open skies’ agreement with the USA. He says the deal – which sees some restrictions regarding transatlantic air flights lifted – will benifit American owned airlines rather than European.  He wants the agreement to be extended, allowing European airlines to operate US internal flights, [...]

Any dream won’t do

Posted on April 22, 2007. Filed under: Television |

The best moments on TV during the last two weeks have all belonged to Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber. During the transmission of the car-crash-as-a-reality-talent-show show ‘Any dream will do’ – the search for a new Joseph -the unblinking eye of the camera has perfectly captured the look of pained anxiety on his Lordship’s face. The reason for [...]

Crime Scene: Croydon

Posted on April 19, 2007. Filed under: Life, London |

I was on the seventh floor of a Croydon office building  yesterday, when around 11 am there was a scuffle by the elevator. There were two young guys arguing over whatever two young guys in Croydon argue about. Very soon the two, still ranting, gesticulating, guys were ejected by burly security men. I thought nothing more [...]

Land pirates sabotage Drebbel?

Posted on April 18, 2007. Filed under: History, Life, London |

The Reconstruction of Drebbel’s 1820 submersible has been damaged. One of the front hydroplanes has been snapped in half. This was the result of  someone using it as a seat, a step to reach the top of the vessel, or simply as a target of empty-souled vandalism.
This incident may see the wooden hulled submarine withdrawn from public [...]

Two teen drunks and a knife proof packet of crisps please

The UK should raise the legal drinking age, say the Institute for Public Policy Research. A study it recently carried out showed that a fifth of children between 11 and 15 are drinking alcohol at least once a week. The government say that tough measures are already in place. I may not agree with the government that the [...]

Et tu BBC?

Posted on April 16, 2007. Filed under: History, Television |

Rome 2 (the TV series) is soon to be broadcast in the UK. Will it suffer the same fate as the original series at the hands of the BBC’s scissors department? Auntie Beeb edited almost an hour out of the first season.  It edited out some of the bad language as, said the sensors, the programmes were to [...]
