I am not an fan of the English rugby team but…

I am not a fan of the English rugby team (being of Welsh stock) so I think I can be objective about that team’s defeat in last night’s World Cup Final.

South Africa’s points all came from penalties (obviously awarded by the referee). The disallowed Try was in fact a Try. Many offences that should have led to English penalties were made by the Boks in front of the referee or the touch judges - a blatant crossing and an off the ball body check being just two.

The referee was an Irishman. This Irishman has a French father, but was allowed to Referee the match between France and Namibia (the match where the non-Gallic team found themselves, at various times, with one and two men sin binned). If, the World Cup had run on expected lines, he would have officiated at a final where if he had been a player he would have been eligible to play!

I am not suggesting the governing body of a world sport or any individual colluded in ‘robbing’ England of the Cup, or more importantly, given the current political situation, ‘helped’ the Boks win. But, of course, everyone is entitled to draw their own conclusions.

Whinger! Take a look at the cold hard facts. Cueto was out, as the pictures prove:

Fair enough Pienk, it ‘appears’ that the player’s foot is over the line. But I have spoken to a former international long jumper and coach, who says he has seen plenty of ‘jump’ pictures like that, that when viewed from another angle show the foot above or away from the line. It needs more and different angle shots to tell. What is important is that this shot was not available to the VT ref! His judgment was based on the video replays every one watching saw – including Jake White (SA coach) who seemed to suggest he thought the try was good. Stuart Dickenson, “”How I wish there was freeze-frame but with the language barrier between me and the French TV producers I wasn’t able to get frame-byframe pictures. The producer didn’t slow it down for me so I had to make the judgment in real time. That’s why it took so long. I was requesting the producer to slow it down and freeze-frame it but he couldn’t do it.”

The other point to remember is that if the try had been awarded England would have gone into the lead and the game may, therefore, have taken on a different aspect and end.
